<p><a href="http://www.losethebackpain.com/aff/index.php?w=101TIPVSL&amp;p=jeley" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft" style="border-style: initial; border-color: initial; margin-top: 6px; margin-bottom: 6px; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; border-width: 0px;" title="back pain causes" src="http://www.losethebackpain.com/images/101backpaintips/101-yellow-300x250.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="250" border="0" /></a>I&#8217;ve talked about all of these <a title="back pain causes" href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/back-pain-causes" target="_blank">back pain causes</a> in different posts, but am going to combine them in an overview here for easier reference.  I&#8217;ll briefly review middle back pain causes, lower back pain causes, and upper back pain causes, as well as some basic tips, easy to do treatments and back pain exercises to help reduce your back pain.  General back pain is caused by very common things like over-use, abuse, lifting heavy items, awkward angles, <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/poor-posture" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with poor posture">poor posture</a>, poor shoes, poor sitting position, desk and computer height, or a fall or trauma.  Sometimes it may only take resting it <span style="text-decoration: underline;">some</span>, ice and/or heat, or mild pain pills to begin healing.  But, it can also be chronic back pain (long-term), which can cause much more serious damage, requiring more serious treatment.</p>
<h2>Upper Back Pain Causes, Middle Back Pain Causes and Lower Back Pain Causes</h2>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Upper Back Pain Causes</span></strong> can be back strain or poor posture sitting at a desk or in a car for long periods, or it could be caused by an injury or trauma.  Many times, upper back pain is accompanied by neck and/or shoulder pain.  Most cases are caused by one or both muscular irritation (shoulder muscles attached to shoulder blade and back of rib cage) or joint dysfunction.  Upper back pain causes can be from a lack of back strength or de-conditioning, as well as over-use, muscle strain, injuries, accidents, etc.  The majority of upper back pain can be treated by passive or active exercise, massage therapy, acupuncture, or chiropractic/osteopathic manipulation.  Many physical rehabilitation programs include a lot of stretching and <a title="back strengthening exercises" href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/back-strengthening%20exercises" target="_blank" class="broken_link">back strengthening exercises</a>.  If there is a certain area that&#8217;s tender, the upper back pain cause may be a &#8216;trigger point&#8217;, which are usually in a <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/skeletal-muscle" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with skeletal muscle">skeletal muscle</a>, and can be worked on by massage therapy, acupuncture or trigger point injections.  Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications (NSAIDs) can also be helpful.  Muscular irritation is usually a sign of inflammation, so anti-inflammatories like Ibuprophen or COX-2 inhibitors can help reduce inflammation.</p>
<p>Joint dysfunction in the joints that connect the ribs to the vertebrae (thoracic) on either side of the <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/spine" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with spine">spine</a> can also cause upper back pain.  Treatment for this usually includes <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/manual-manipulation" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with manual manipulation">manual manipulation</a> by a physical therapist, chiropractor, or osteopathic physician to help mobilize and reduce pain.  <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/long-term-relief" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with long-term relief">Long-term relief</a> usually requires a home exercise treatment program to stretch and strengthen your back muscles which are supported by your stomach muscles.  <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/aerobic-conditioning" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with aerobic conditioning">Aerobic conditioning</a> is important to maintain upper back pain relief.  Anti-inflammatories also help this.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Middle Back Pain Causes</span></strong> are usually injury or trauma, but your middle back also compensates for lower back pain, neck pain or pelvic pain.  It may feel like a &#8216;stabbing&#8217; pain, and can radiate to the ribs.  Your blood <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/sugar" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with sugar">sugar</a> control system can actually cause middle back pain.  You might reduce <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/sugar" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with sugar">sugar</a> / carbohydrates, as they can &#8216;overload&#8217; the system, and actually irritate it or cause it to go out of place.  There are twelve (12) different pairs of spinal nerves at the middle back, and some even go to the shoulders and arm.  Middle back pain usually responds well to chiropractic treatment.  The sooner you get treatment, the better, as it can cause joint, spinal, disc or nerve degeneration, as any chronic back pain can.</p>
<p>You might try nutritional supplements for any back condition, as nutrition is KEY in healing, repair and pain reduction.  However, talk to your doctor.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Lower Back Pain Causes</strong></span> may include a pinched nerve, possible bulging or disc herniation.  It could be Sciatica (nerves) or <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/spinal-stenosis" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with spinal stenosis">Spinal Stenosis</a>.  Joint disease could be involved.  Musculoskeletal pain syndromes like Fibromyalgia or Myofascial Pain Syndrome could be involved.  Other skeletal lower back pain causes could be Sacroiliitis, Osteomyelitis, or even tumors.</p>
<p>Back pain is a Symptom, many times originating from other organs (referred back pain).  Things like appendicitis, pelvic or bladder infection, ovarian disorders, kidney disease and aneurysms can cause referred back pain.  Always go to your doctor to be evaluated, tested and diagnosed.</p>

<p><strong>Upper Back Pain Causes from Muscular Irritation</strong></p>

<p>Your back is comprised of over 30 muscles, many ligaments, joints, discs and 33 vertebrae.  So , you can see how easy it is to cause back pain.  I&#8217;ve talked about many back pain causes, but will give a brief overview of the most common back pain causes, then will review some other issues that back pain can cause.  Some of the most common back pain causes include:</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/muscular-strain" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with muscular strain">Muscular strain</a>, lumbar muscle strain or <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/muscle-spasm" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with muscle spasm">muscle spasm</a></span> caused by a sudden or awkward movement, fall or other impact, over-straining your back, lifting bulky or heavy items, awkward angles, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting, or <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/trauma" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with trauma">trauma</a>.  This causes inflammation or injury including possible tearing.  Ligament sprains are common when the back is stretched beyond its capacity.  These commonly occur with muscle strains.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Herniated discs</span> are caused by compression of the spinal nerves.  They result from repetitive motion like machine operators or truck drivers, or unaccustomed heavy loading on the back.  Proper lifting is Very Important.  Sciatica is a common form of a herniated disc or &#8220;radicular&#8221; back pain, along the nerve(s).</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Osteoporosis</span> is a common cause of back pain, particularly in women and when you&#8217;re older.  It affects the spinal joints. It&#8217;s referred to as a &#8220;degenerative joint disease&#8221;.  It can get worse the longer it goes when bearing weight or walking.  Surgery is sometimes needed for this.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Spinal Stenosis</span> is another back pain cause, also more common in people over 50.  It&#8217;s a narrowing of the spinal canal and includes thickening of ligaments, bone spurs, and enlarged joints (cartilate) from arthritis-type changes.  It also gets worse with longer periods of bearing weight or walking, and may need surgery.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Fibromyalgia</span> is another common cause of chronic back pain and <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/chronic-lower-back-pain" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with chronic lower back pain">chronic lower back pain</a>.  It&#8217;s rheumatic which includes soft tissue pain, sleep interruptions, and widespread, evenly-distributed tenderness.</li>
</ul>

<li>Other common causes of back pain are: #1 Poor Posture, standing, sitting or hunching, bending too long, constipation, gas, stress, kidney stones or infections, dehydration, smoking or even eating the wrong foods (sugar, processed foods).  Eat more raw, organic types of foods.</li>

<h2>What Other Health Issues Can Back Pain Cause?</h2>
<p>There are a lot of other health issues that back pain can cause, including <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/sleep-problems" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with sleep problems">sleep problems</a>, stomach pain, <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/erectile-dysfunction" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with erectile dysfunction">erectile dysfunction</a>, bowel and bladder issues, infections, and obviously other related body and muscle pains, neck pain, inflammation, injury, nausea, even disease.  It can be very limiting and debilitating physically, and can cause depression emotionally.  So, there are obviously a lot of other issues that back pain can cause.  They can be very inter-related.</p>

<li>If you&#8217;ve just developed lower back pain, STAY ACTIVE and try some back pain medicines like Acetaminophen (i.e., Tylenol) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) like Ibuprophen (Advil or Motrin), or Naproxen (Aleve or Naprosyn).  Laying down or being immobile for too long can actually make your lower back pain worse and lead to other problems like muscle weakness and stiff joints.</li>

<p>There are many possible causes of lower back pain, and I&#8217;ll review the most common causes and symptoms here, as well as some good lower back pain exercises and lower <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/back-pain-treatment" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with back pain treatment">back pain treatment</a> that helps.&nbsp; Lower back pain causes usually include over-using or over-straining the back, bad posture or positioning, lifting heavy objects or awkward movement, accidents, falls or other injuries or traumas to the back or spinal column, etc.</p>
<p>Lower <a title="back pain cause" rel="follow" href="http://www.stopyourbackpaincausenow.com" target="_blank" class="broken_link"><strong>back pain causes</strong></a> usually include muscle strain that can lead to overall imbalance of the muscles and spinal column.&nbsp; This can lead to constant tension on muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and discs, which makes your back more prone to injury.&nbsp; Many times these are cumulative, or add on to each other, because you&#8217;ll move differently to avoid the pain, or use muscles that aren&#8217;t sore.&nbsp; This can cause you to overcompensate, straining these muscles in addition to the ones you&#8217;ve already strained or injured.</p>
<p>The most common causes of <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/chronic-lower-back-pain" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with chronic lower back pain">chronic lower back pain</a> include what I indicated above:</p>
<ul>
<li>Over-use, strain or injury to muscles, ligaments and joints including the sacroiliac joint.</li>
<li>Pressure on the nerves in the spinal column including the sciatic nerve, which can be caused by a <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/herniated-disc" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with herniated disc">herniated disc</a></li>
<li>Fractures to the vertebrae caused by an accident, fall or other <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/trauma" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with trauma">trauma</a> to the spine, compressing it</li>
<li>Osteoarthritis, which is a degeneration of the joints including the hips, usually when we get older</li>
<li>Vertebra defects that cause vertebrae to slide over each other (Spondylolysis and Spondylolisthesis)</li>
<li>Narrowing of the spinal canal which can also develop with age (Spinal Stenosis)</li>
<li>Spinal deformities that cause a curvature of the spine like Kyphosis or severe Scoliosis</li>
<li>Compression fractures most commonly found in post-menopausal women with <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/osteoporosis" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with osteoporosis">Osteoporosis</a>, which even a sneeze can cause a compression fracture, or after extended use of a &#8220;corticosteroid&#8221;.</li>
<li>Kidney or ovary problems, tumors and pregnancy and other less common issues can all contribute to lower back pain</li>
</ul>
<h2>Lower Back Pain Exercises</h2>
<p><img style="float: right; margin-left: 15px; margin-right: 15px;" src="http://freethumbs.dreamstime.com/13/medium/free_133262.jpg" alt="lower back pain exercises" width="141" height="106" />Lower back pain exercise is VERY helpful in alleviating most types of back pain, including chronic lower back pain and acute back pain.&nbsp; Lower back pain exercises include <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/stretching" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with stretching">stretching</a> and strengthening the muscles of your stomach (abdomen) and back (spine), which help reduce and prevent back problems.&nbsp; This will also help improve your posture, which is Key, and keep your spine in the correct position.</p>
<p>You should warm your muscle up with a light activity like walking before doing stretching or strengthening exercises.&nbsp; Wear loose clothes and DON&#8217;T do any <a href="http://stopbackpaincausenow.com/tag/low-back-pain-exercises" class="st_tag internal_tag" rel="tag" title="Posts tagged with low back pain exercises">low back pain exercises</a> that hurt unless you&#8217;ve talked with your doctor.&nbsp; They can also help you develop an exercise program.&nbsp; <span style="text-decoration: underline;">NOTE</span>:&nbsp; If you have a herniated disk or other disk problem, you should also check with them First.</p>

<p>Lower back pain massage therapy like the Homedics back massager, Jeannie Rub massager (hand held massager), a back massage chair, or car back massager are all great back pain massage options, and some include deep tissue massage therapy.</p>
