Back Pain Relief Products

There are a lot of back pain relief products available today, and you need to find the proper one to treat your upper back muscle pain or lower back pain.  I’ll list some causes of upper back pain and lower back pain, as well as some treatments.  You can then decide what the best back pain product may be for you to get the upper back pain relief or lower back pain remedy you need.

Upper Back Muscle Pain, Lower Back Pain and Lower Back and Leg Pain

Upper back muscle pain is usually a result of falls, sports injuries, car accidents, abuse and over-use.  The pain’s normally worse when you make certain movements or do certain activities.  A muscle spasm is fairly common with upper back injuries.  Stiffness and tightness is very common, and you may feel a ‘pull’ or ’stretch’ when you use those muscles.  This usually happens when you’re  stretching and reaching.

You can start to rehabilitate these muscles after a couple of days, but you need to take it slow and easy.  The moderate movement increases blood circulation, which speeds healing.

lower back and leg pain

Most lower back pain is triggered by a combination of overuse, injury, or muscle strain.  It’s believed that muscle strain can lead to an imbalance of the spine over time.  This can lead to continuous tension in your soft and hard tissues (muscles, ligaments, discs and bones), and can make your back more prone to injury or re-injury.  They tend to make each other worse, because you’ll compensate using another muscle when you hurt one, which will strain it.

Lower back and leg pain is most commonly sciatica back pain, which is usually a shooting pain from your lower back down your leg.  It can also be “referred back pain”, which is when your brain thinks the pain is in one place when it’s in another.  It could also be compressed nerve roots from the spinal cord to the leg which can be caused by a herniated disc.  This would have to be tested to see how affected the compressed nerves are.  Surgery could be required, but I always suggest treating it from the most conservative graduating to more radical treatment.

Another possibility could be tendon overuse.  This can be treated with rest and ice or gentle massage to find and help the source of the pain.  Chiropractic care is an option, and you could get muscle relaxers, but that takes longer to heal.  Sometimes it can be a neurological dysfunction causing neuropathic pain from the back to the leg.  If you have pain in both the back and leg, there are other possibilities which I won’t go into here.

back pain relief exercise

You want to be fairly certain of your back pain cause.  If you have any of these back pain symptoms:

Adrenal Fatigue Alert               Piriformis Syndrome
Arthritis of the Spine                Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
Degenerative Disc Disease      Sciatica
Facet Joint Syndrome              Scoliosis
Fibromyalgia                            Somatic Pain in your back
Forward Head Posture            Spondylolisthesis
Herniated Disc                         Stenosis of the spine
Lower Back Pain                      Upper back pain
Neck Pain                                 Vertebral compression fracture
Pinched Nerve

I would suggest taking a look at the Lose the Back Pain System.  It uses muscle balance therapy which I talked about above, and shows you how to identify the cause, treat the dysfunction, then treat the overall condition.  It’s helped tens of thousands of chronic back pain sufferers, and offers a 60 Day Money Back Guarantee.  Right now they have a 21 Day Challenge where you only pay shipping ($9.95 I believe), and if you don’t lose your back pain, you don’t pay anything so there’s nothing to lose.  I stand by it, and have written about it before.  All you have to lose is the pain!  You can check it out here:  Back Pain Relief Products

Lower Back Pain Left Side: Differences Between Lower Back Pain on Left Side and Lower Back Pain Kidney Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Lower Back Pain Left Side

Many of us experience lower back pain in the left or right side and don’t know whether it may be related to lower back pain kidney symptoms.  I’m going to review primarily the back pain causes of lower back pain left side and lower back pain kidney symptoms to help you better understand what might be causing your back pain in the left or right side.

I’ll review possible causes and symptoms of lower back pain on the left side, then lower back pain kidney causes and symptoms, and list some possible lower back pain remedies in treating lower back pain.

Lower Back Pain on Left Side

There are a lot of possible causes of lower back pain on the left side.  I’ll list some of the most common causes and symptoms along with possible remedies.  Some of the main causes of left side or right side back pain can be any of the following:

  • Carrying a heavy purse or bag on one side
  • Sitting on a thick wallet
  • Back strain, pulled muscle or other muscle imbalance
  • An inadequate mattress or poor laying or sleeping position
  • A tilted pelvis due to one leg being shorter than the other (Fairly common.  My right leg is 1/2″ longer than my left, which can cause me a lot of pain due to the pelvic tilt to one side.  I have to wear a small lift in my left shoe to help accomodate that.)
  • Gastrointestinal / Digestive – gas, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Weight gain
  • Aging or wear and tear

Other possible causes can include:

  • Kidney infection or referred pain from the kidney for a urinary tract infection, bladder infection, etc.
  • Prostate or Sciatica
  • Herniated disc, other spinal issue or cracked or broken rib
  • Pregnancy
  • Renal dysfunction (kidney problems that reduce the body’s ability to retain adequate essential nutrients and clear toxins from the blood)
  • Diverticulosis (small pouches develop in the lining of the large intestine extending into the muscular tissue around it.  If they get infected or inflamed, it’s diverticulitis.  Rare instances also occur in the stomach or small intestine)

Lower Back Pain Kidney

lower back pain kidney

Lower back pain can come from the kidney, and lower back pain kidney causes and symptoms can be similar.  But there are some very different symptoms of kidney lower back pain.

Kidney back pain is normally felt where the kidneys are, just above the highest part of the pelvis on either side of the lower back.  It  can also be referred to the frontal groin or hip area.  If there ar multiple symptoms, it can be attributable to the kidney.  These may include:

  • Kidney injury from a fall or accident
  • Kidney infection. Symptoms of a kidney infection can include any of the following:

    • Lower back pain on one or both sides which can radiate into the groin or up to the waist
    • Tenderness or ache in the kidney area and can radiate to other areas
    • Fever or high temperature, chills, backache
    • May feel sick and possibly vomit
    • Urine may be cloudy and/or smell different, and may be bloody
    • You may have to urinate more frequently and it may burn
  • Kidney stones:

    • Can be painless if they’re small, but if they’re larger, they can get lodged as the body tries to pass them.  This can be very painful.  They can also cause an infection that leads to the same symptoms above.

Your doctor can run bacterial, blood or functioning tests to determine kidney related issues.  Treatment can include rest and antibiotics.  It can last several weeks, but could be longer.

Lower back pain symptoms and treatment are different:

  • Symptoms are normally more local
  • There may be a sudden back pain
  • It may get better or worse by moving differently
  • It doesn’t cause a fever, illness or other symptoms above
  • Treatments such as heat or ice therapy, stretching exercises, back pain medicine or muscle relaxants, massage therapy, back support and therapy help relieve the pain temporarily

back pain relief products

If the pain subsides with any of these back pain relief products or therapy, you more than likely have lower back pain symptoms versus a kidney issue.  Lower back pain caused by a kidney problem won’t go away or subside with these treatments.

The bottom line is that you you don’t want to let it go on indefinitely or try to diagnose it yourself.  If you have lower back pain left side, right side or lower back pain kidney symptoms you need to see your doctor, particularly if it continues or worsens.  Kidney issues can be very serious, and you want to make sure you get the right information and diagnosis so it’s treated promptly and correctly.  If you have a family history of kidney infections, or had a recent fall or accident of some type that could have damaged your kidneys, you should see your doctor right away.  Treatment for the two is very different, and you need to be sure you’re treating the right condition to avoid further risk to your health.

Back Pain Cause: Stop Your Back Pain Cause Now! Treating Lower Back Pain and a Lower Back Pain Remedy

Back Pain Cause

Muscular back pain and back pain symptoms are some of the most commonly experienced health issues worldwide.  They say that 8 out of every 10 people will experience back pain at least once in their lives.  One of the possibly surprising causes of lower back pain is inactivity, lack of movement.  It’s believed that continued muscle strain can lead to an imbalance in the structure of the spine, which leads to constant tension on muscles, ligaments, discs and bones.  This makes the back more injury prone.

These back pain causes can exacerbate each another, meaning that if you strain a muscle, you’ll walk or move differently to avoid the pain or tightness.  This can cause a strain of other muscles that don’t usually work that way.

Some of the most common back pain causes can be one or more of the following issues:

  • Misuse or overuse of a muscle (muscle strain), ligament or joint
  • Injury or re-injury
  • Pressure on nerve roots which could be a herniated disc or osteoarthritis (degeneration of the joint)
  • Spondylolysis or Spondylolisthesis: vertebra slide over each other when aggravated by doing certain things
  • Spinal stenosis: a narrowing of the spinal canal which usually develops with age
  • Vertebrae fractures caused by a lot of force like a car accident or other intense blow to the spine, or a compression of the spine by falling on your head or buttocks
  • Spinal deformities include a curvature of the spine such as scoliosis (side curvature) or kyphosis (outward curvature)
  • Compression fractures are more common with postmenopausal women with Osteoporosis or men or women after long-term use of corticosteroids (psoriasis treatment)
  • Inactivity or sitting.  You sit at home, you sit in your car, you sit at work, you come home and sit, and you go to bed

Treating Lower Back Pain

treating lower back pain

Treating lower back pain can vary depending on your back pain cause and symptoms.  As I’ve indicated in prior articles, a lower back pain remedy could include some of the following treatments:

  • Heat or Ice
  • Back pain medicine such as pain killers and anti inflammatories, back pain ointments and creams
  • Massage therapy
  • Accupuncture
  • Muscle stretching exercises and/or back strengthening exercises
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections

In May, 2009 the American Pain Society issued new guidelines on treating lower back pain, indicating that noninvasive procedures are recommended over surgical procedures.  Surgery should be a last resort as a treatment for chronic back pain.

Back Pain Relief Products:  Choosing a Back Pain Product That’s Right For You

There are so many back pain relief products to choose from, it’s hard to narrow down exactly what you need to alleviate your specific back pain. There are also many different kinds, such as topical back pain relievers and massage treatments, chiropractic and holistic treatment methods, electrical stimulation (TENS), ergonomic, massage and heat chairs, inversion tables, back supports and braces, etc.  The list goes on…  I won’t go into all of them here, but you can learn more about them at my Back Pain Relief Products page.

Back Pain Product: Gaiam BalanceBall Chair

Gaiam BalanceBall Chair

One back pain product I’ve recently learned about that I wanted to share some information with you on is the Gaiam BalanceBall Chair. It’s a unique alternative seating product featured in the Wall Street Journal on June 12, 2009. I’m going to briefly outline how this chair came to be, what it’s about, and it’s purpose as a tool for treating lower back pain.

Gaiam BalanceBall Chair as a Treatment for Chronic Back Pain:  How It Came To Be and What It’s About

This chair was developed by Gaiam, a company that specializes in organic, yoga and fitness products,  and Dr. Randy Weinzoff, a 1990 graduate of Palmer College Chiropractic and chiropractic pioneer.  They say Dr. Weinzoff has been providing a full spectrum approach to health and well-being for over 14 years.  He’s a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and specializes in exercise and sports rehabilitation, alleviation of chronic pain and nutritional analysis.

The Gaiam BalanceBall Chair is a revolution in alternative seating at home and in the office, and apparently continues to be a customer favorite.  It’s patented design combines fitness with comfort and ergonomic back support at an affordable price.  Gaiam developed this chair with Dr. Weinzoff as an effective tool for strengthening core muscles and improving spinal alignment.  The removable BalanceBall can be used for exercises on or off the chair, which is a handy aspect.

How the BalanceBall Chair Helps Alleviate Chronic Lower Back Pain:

  • Provides core strengthening, ergonomic back support and comfort
  • Helps improve spinal alignment and reduce nerve compression

BalanceBall Chair Features, Details and What Comes With It:

  • It’s designed for people 5’-5’11″ weighing up to 300 lbs.
  • It has rolling, lockable castor wheels and an adjustable support bar
  • It comes with an air pump and desktop workout guide for an effective low-impact workout and stretching routine
  • It uses a removable professional grade 20.5” anti-burst exercise ball (vinyl-no latex)
  • It’s stable but lightweight (13 lbs), and the base is made from molded PVC
  • Easy 1-tool assembly
  • It helps strengthen your core muscles and improve your posture just by sitting on it versus a regular chair, which I think is pretty neat.
  • It’s very reasonably priced, particularly with the private special offer Gaiam has through the end of this month

Gaiam BalanceBall Chair Reviews and Ratings

I haven’t personally used this product, but have added some reviews of the Gaiam BalanceBall Chair, which include customer’s positive and negative aspects of it.

Barbara Brady from Woman’s Day had picked it up, and gave her opinion:

The Pros:  “…more comfortable than I expected, and it made me more conscious about sitting up straight and engaging my core muscles.  As office furniture/exercise equipment goes, it’s also… reasonable…  It makes a great conversation starter, too—everyone who enters my office since it’s arrival wants to try it.”

The Cons:  “Thanks to the chair base and back, it’s still possible to get lazy and slump forward or back if you have the urge… I found the ball a little too low considering the length of my legs and the height of my very ergonomically-incorrect desk.  So my stomach and back might get stronger, but I could end up with carpal tunnel. Hmmm…”

What this tells you is that you need to consider your desk height, the chair height, etc., which you should always do with furniture and seating to avoid back injury.

Some Other BalanceBall Chair Reviews:

5.0 out of 5 stars Lot of Time at the Computer?! You will love this!
I used one of these at my last job. This is a wonderful chair. The first time that I sat on it I fell off, but then once I learned how to sit on it, it was amazing. It kept my back straight, and kept me sitting upright, and I didn’t feel so sleepy after 8 hours at the computer. I love this chair. It’s worth the price.
4.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly comfortable
The chair is surprisingly comfortable. I’m not sure how *much* it helps me with balance or toning, but I do actually feel like I’m using my muscles a little more than usual while sitting all day at the office, so I feel pretty good about it. And it looks really nice, too.

Overall I like the chair a lot, just one real complaint. There is no height adjustment. For me it’s not much of an issue because my desk happens to be at around the right height. But this might be a problem for someone else. I suppose you could let some air out of the ball to make it a little lower, but that doesn’t strike me as an ideal solution…

balance ball chair5.0 out of 5 stars Great Chair, Great Price
I have peristent lower back pain when I spend too much time sititng at my desk, which is a bad thing for a writer! I’ve been using it a few days, and I’ve noticed I don’t wake up in the morning with back pain any more. My one fear is that the cats may try to jump on it and puncture it at some point (we lost one exercise ball that way), so this might not be the best chair depending on your household inhabitants. You might want to note that its suitability will depend greatly on your height as well. I’m 5′9″. (the ball is professional grade anti-burst)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great office chair
I really like using this chair. I spend a ton of time at the computer and this has helped my posture and the tension in my neck and back.

I do have to say that it took some time to get used to. I get motion sickness and for the first few weeks I felt like I was on a boat! Once my body figured out what was going on, it was smooth sailing from there.

The wheeled contraption holding the ball is a good idea in an office environment if you don’t want to humor your co-workers by rolling off.

There are mixed reviews on this back pain product, which there should be, and you can see there are variables you need to consider.  There are more reviews about it around the web.  I always recommend researching a product before you decide whether it’s for you.  It sounds like a great product, and has apparently helped a lot of people as a treatment for chronic back pain, but you do need to pay attention to individual height recommendations, desk and chair height, etc.  It’s rated 4.4 out of 5, which is a good rating.
It’s reasonably priced, and I would suggest that if you want to learn more about it and/or purchase it, Gaiam guarantees the lowest price.  Right now through a special private offer at the link below, you get free shipping and 20% off through the end of June, 2009.  So if you’re thinking about getting it, I’d take advantage of this offer.  If you decide to get it later, I’m sure they’ll provide other incentives down the road.
Please let me know if you’ve found this article helpful.  And, if you purchase the Gaiam BalanceBall Chair, I would like your feedback good or bad.  We can’t evaluate back pain products fairly if we only get positive feedback.  However, that doesn’t mean you need to make up something negative to say about it if you love it.  I’d obviously love to hear that, too, since I try to provide information on the best quality back pain relief products on my site.  Thanks, and let me hear from you!

Causes of Muscle Spasms: Involuntary Muscle Spasms and Lower Back Pain Remedy

Causes of Muscle Spasms

This article will discuss the various types and causes of muscle spasms, back pain symptoms, lower back pain remedies, treatment and prevention, and touch on back pain medicine and some of the best back pain relief products available today.

To understand the causes of muscle spasms, you need to understand how muscles work.  Whenever you move, various muscles in your body will contract or expand.  When muscles involuntarily contract, this is called spasms or involuntary muscle spasms.

Involuntary Muscle Spasms

Though it’s more common to have muscle spasms in our back, neck, calves or feet, every muscle in our body is subject to muscle spasms.   Muscle spasms are the most common reason for back pain cause.  These muscle spasms usually happen from muscle fatigue, sudden or continued over-exertion such as exercise or sports activities; using the muscles for things they’re not conditioned for, including lifting heavy or bulky items, or simply moving your body at an awkward angle.  It can be a side effect of certain medications, and sometimes an electrolyte imbalance or neurological disorder such as a stroke, trauma, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis can trigger it. Some symptoms of muscle spasms may be a burning back pain or sudden back pain.  Generally, to help relieve the causes of muscle spasms, the best thing to do is to gradually and slowly stretch, such as muscle stretching exercises.

I’ll outline some of the back pain symptoms and remedies below.

Back Pain Symptom

back pain symptom

  1. Muscle trauma is an extreme stress on the muscles that causes mild to severe spasms or cramps. The area can become inflamed, red or swollen.  You might feel a sudden “pull” or hear a snapping sound when this happens.  Slow muscle stretching exercises, moving and walking around will help this.

   2. Dehydration is a major contributor to lower back muscle spasms.  Loss of sodium due to dehydration causes limb and abdominal cramps or spasms.  If you drink a good deal of water and increase salts, it will reduce the spasms quite a bit.

   3. A poor supply of oxygen to the muscles is one of the main reasons behind spasms or cramps.  You can treat it by breathing slowly and deeply.  A gentle massage and slow stretching can also be effective.  Poor blood circulation is an example of a poor supply of oxygen to the muscles, and you need to get the blood circulating, getting the oxygen to the muscles.

   4. Night spasms or “Charley Horses” usually occur in your legs, calves or feet at night or when you’re resting.  They can be fairly painful if you’re also dehydrated.  It’s usually caused by sitting too long, or low potassium, magnesium, calcium or sodium.  Bananas and some other fruits are a great source of potassium, and help my Charley Horses.

   5. Menstruation is another cause of muscle spasms in the abdomen, sometimes referred to as stomach back pain.  The best treatment for menstrual cramps or spasms is using heat, an appropriate pain reliever/anti-inflammatory such as ibuprophen or Motrin if approved by your doctor, and doing slow stretches.  Pregnancy and back pain are also a very common combination.

   6. Tension causes your entire body to tense up.  Try to stay calm and relaxed with slow breathing, meditation, visualization, or doing something you enjoy that will relax you.

   7. An electrolyte deficiency is another big cause of muscle spasms, which is a deficiency of potassium (Hypokalemia) or calcium (Hypocalemia).  If you supplement your diet with calcium and potassium, this will relieve it.

   8. A deficiency of vitamins like Thiamine (B1), Pantothenic Acid (B5) and Pyridoxine (B6) will cause muscle spasms.  Vitamin and mineral supplements will help your overall health as well as reducing the causes of muscle spasms.

    * Stay hydrated with plenty of water.  Water helps ‘lubricate’ your muscles and organs, and is vital for proper functioning of your entire system.  Also be sure to replace electrolytes lost during strenuous activity or sports

    * Avoid excessive fatigue.  This not only helps your muscles, but your emotional, mental and physical health

    * Take vitamin and mineral supplements to not only reduce muscle spasms, but to maintain overall health

    * Take breaks during increased activity, stretch and relax your muscles

    * Observe ergonomics such as table height, chair position, foot support, etc. (see more details at the Stop Back Pain Cause Now page)

    * Avoid high heeled footwear.  This puts a tremendous strain on your back and entire body.  Your body’s not in its proper position with high heels.  They push your weight forward, throwing your posture, spine and hips out of whack, and are very bad for your feet

These are some of the main things you can do to relieve muscle spasms as well as help sciatic nerve relief, and there’s more helpful information about this in this blog.  There are also several types of back pain medicine you can take, which I’ve included in other posts.  There are a few high quality back pain relief products I can highly recommend including Back Soothe Wellness Oil (Wonderful), a TENS system that you no longer need a prescription for (I have one and it’s really helped me over the years), as well as different supports and exercisers, inversion table, the best back supplements, and Back Relax and Pain Free HP back pain products.

I hope this article’s been helpful.  Let me know if you have a specific question or issue.  I’d be happy to respond or find the answer for you.  Good luck, and let me know how you do!

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

This morning I was volunteering and directing traffic for this festival (was standing up for 4 hours) and I started getting a really sharp pain in my back, just below my left shoulder blade. It feels like a knife that’s digging into my back. It’s been a full day and I still feel it. The pain is tolerable sitting down but standing up it makes me cry out in pain. It hurts worse when I try lifting up my left arm.

The thing that really scares me is that 4 years ago i had scoli (more…)

Causes of Muscle Spasms

Causes of Muscle Spasms

The causes of muscle spasms vary, but the results are the same.  Muscles spasms or muscle cramps is the stiffening shortening feeling you get with a sudden contraction of the muscles.  This can be cured easily and effectively with simple treatments you can do with little to no cost, and can help right away.

Your muscles are responsible for your body movements.  They contract and lengthen when your brain sends a signal to the muscles when moving.  Things like moving suddenly, at a bad angle, lifting awkwardly or bulky, heavy items, or strenous activity like sports are big causes of muscle spasms.  A lot of times, muscle spasms are caused by simple muscle fatigue or non-use.  Sometimes, nerve damage can result in “contracture”, which is a permanent shortening of the muscle.

I’ll review some of the causes of muscle spasms, and treatments you can do easily and quickly to get rid of your back pain symptom and involuntary muscle spasms, such as muscle stretching exercises, low back pain exercises, back pain medications, and back pain relief products to help you get on your way to recovery immediately.

involuntary muscle spasmsSome of the main causes of muscle spasms are:

1.  Dehydration is probably the biggest cause of muscle cramps, which can also cause a loss of sodium.  If you drink plenty of water, it will elasticize your muscles and reduce cramping.  Increasing salts can also help.

2.  A poor supply of oxygen to the muscles is also a big cause of muscle spasms or cramps.  This can be treated with deep and slow breathing, and a gentle massage or slow stretching can also be very effective.

3. An electrolyte depletion is a lack of potassium and calcium.  You can overcome this by taking calcium and potassium supplements.

4. Menstruation is one of the big causes of muscle cramps in varying degress.  You can relieve this by using heat such as heating pads, stretching, and pain relievers or anti-inflammatories such as Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprophen, etc., as well as some other back pain relief products.

5. Nocturnal Spasms are muscle cramps that you get at night, such as a “Charley Horse” in your calves or feet.  They can be very painful if you’re also dehydrated and/or you have low levels of things like calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, or sit too long.  Bananas are a great source of potassium.  When I eat more bananas, my muscle cramps go away.

6.  Muscle trauma is an excessive strain on the muscles, which can cause mild to several muscle cramps.  It becomes inflamed, swollen, or red.  Sometimes you’ll hear a ’snapping’ sound when this happens.  Slow muscle stretching exercises and low back pain exercises are very useful for relieving this right away.

Whatever your causes of muscle spasms are, it’s important that you take all the preventive measures you can to alleviate them, including:  slow, deep breaths, drinking more water, taking supplements, applying heat, muscle stretching exercises or massage, taking anti-inflammatories / back pain medications, and recommended back pain relief products you may need to help reduce or remove your back pain cause.  As always, I encourage you to see your physician for any chronic back pain symptoms.

There are some very helpful back pain relief products and providers I can recommend that have great results, guarantees, and customer service.  Some of these are:

Lower Back Muscle Spasms: How to Relieve the Causes of Muscle Spasms

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Lower Back Muscle Spasms

Millions of people suffer from lower back muscle spasms every year. Back muscle spasms can occur from poor posture, strenuous activity, or lifting heavy objects.  You can feel your lower back muscles stiffen or contract, and lower back muscle pain will follow.  This is when you normally find out you’ve strained your back.

This article discusses some of the causes, simple and natural remedies, and back pain relief products you can use right away to relieve your lower back muscle pain.

Causes of Muscle Spasms

back pain symptomThere are many symptoms for your back pain cause. They’re involuntary muscle spasms that can be caused by lack of conditioning, low levels of nutrients or supplements, fatigue, over-use or mis-use, or lack of stretching and flexibility in the muscles.  It can occur during pregnancy, or even as a side effect of certain medications.  You’ll notice that if your body is not at a correct angle when doing something, it can trigger a muscle spasm.  One of the easiest and best solutions to avoid or minimize them is by stretching; keeping your back muscles loose and flexible.  A back muscle massage is also a great help.  Other possible causes of lower back muscle spasms can include neurological, nerve damage, stroke, a trauma, spinal cord injury, and even multiple sclerosis.

Low Electrolytes – Potassium or Calcium deficiency.  The best way to ensure you have proper levels of all vitamins and minerals is by taking nutritional supplements specific to your needs.  Foods that are natural in these are also great supplements.  Bananas, for example, are a great source of potassium.

Dehydration is a big cause of muscle spasms.  Always drink plenty of water to keep your entire body hydrated and healthier.

Menstruation or Pregnancy and Back Pain.  If you are pregnant or menstruating, you’re very likely to have increased muscle spasms due to the hormonal imbalance in your body; and if pregnant, the fetus is absorbing a great deal of the nutrients your system needs.  During these times, it’s critical that you take additional supplements specific to your condition, and your diet also plays a big part.

You can get temporary relief by using a heating pad, massage, stretching, and taking appropriate over the counter back pain medicine such as Motrin, Ibuprophen, Tylenol, etc. Always consult with your doctor before taking anything while you are pregnant.  There are a lot of quality back pain products available to help reduce and eliminate the cause of your back pain.

There are also simple muscle stretching exercises and low back pain exercises you can do that will help alleviate the muscle spasms.  You can see these on the Back Strengthening Exercises page.

Although there are a lot of causes of lower back muscle spasms, there are also a lot of simple and natural relievers such as proper diet and supplements, drinking plenty of water to keep your muscles hydrated, muscle stretching exercises, massage, using a heating pad, and safe pain relievers.  Don’t distress!  If you’re proactive, you will see a difference. :}
