There can be a lot of reasons for upper back muscle pain, including car accidents, injuries or falls. All of these contribute to symptoms of thoracic back pain and upper thoracic back pain. Upper back pain can affect your ability to turn your head or use your arms. It can be very painful, and there’s a syndrome called “thoracic outlet syndrome” that’s diagnosed fairly often which is long term muscular pain in the neck, shoulders, arms and upper back.

The major symptom of thoracic back pain of course is Pain. It may be consistent or come and go, and it usually gets worse when you make certain movements or do certain activities. Other symptoms of thoracic back pain, upper thoracic back pain and upper back muscle pain are upper back muscle spasms, which are fairly common in upper back injuries. This is when the muscle contracts, which is painful and uncontrollable. It’s like a “charley horse”. Other symptoms include stiffness and tight back muscles which are common. This may cause a ‘pulling’ type of feeling when they’re used, and usually happens when you’re reaching with your arms.

For the most part, the upper back muscle pain will go away. If you stress over it, it will last longer because stress tightens the muscles. Some of the best things you can do initially for upper back muscle pain relief is heat, massage therapy, water therapy, back pain medicine, rest, etc. It will get better with time, and once you’re through the first 2-3 days you can start to rehabilitate the back muscles by slow Light stretching, etc. This will increase the blood circulation to the back mucles and help speed healing. You can’t try to do too much too fast or you’ll make it worse, including possibly building scar tissue which you don’t want. If you take it slow and easy, that’s the best medicine.
