Upper back pain causes are much like causes in that they can result from an injury like a trauma such as a fall, or poor posture or strain over a period of time.  In recent years, upper has been a common complaint, because so many of us work at desks and computers most of the day, don’t have proper posture, and don’t move around or stretch.  A lot of times, you’ll also have neck pain and/or shoulder pain with it.

Two of the main that contribute to the majority of upper back pain are:

  • Irritation or inflammation of the muscles
  • Dysfunction of the joints or “myofascial pain”

A lot of the time upper back pain and muscular irritation is caused by a lack of fitness or muscle strength, or injuries from over-using the muscles, like Repetitive Motion Injury (RMI) or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  Muscular strain and irritation occurs from accidents, injuries, sports activities, etc.

How to Get from Upper Back Muscle Pain

For this type of upper back muscle pain, these are some manual types of treatments you can do to help get upper back pain relief:

  • Exercise, Activity and passive physical therapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Osteopathic or chiropractic manipulation
  • Acupuncture

Upper Back Muscle Pain: Symptoms of Thoracic Back Pain and Upper Back Pain Relief

There can be a lot of reasons for , including car accidents, injuries or falls.  All of these contribute to and upper .  Upper back pain can affect your ability to turn your head or use your arms.  It can be very painful, and there’s a syndrome called “thoracic outlet syndrome” that’s diagnosed fairly often which is long term muscular pain in the neck, shoulders, arms and upper back.

Lower back and leg pain is most commonly sciatica back pain, which is usually a shooting pain from your lower back down your leg.  It can also be “referred back pain”, which is when your brain thinks the pain is in one place when it’s in another.  It could also be compressed nerve roots from the spinal cord to the leg which can be caused by a herniated disc.  This would have to be tested to see how affected the compressed nerves are.  Surgery could be required, but I always suggest treating it from the most conservative graduating to more radical treatment.

Another possibility could be tendon overuse.  This can be treated with rest and ice or gentle massage to find and help the source of the pain.  Chiropractic care is an option, and you could get muscle relaxers, but that takes longer to heal.  Sometimes it can be a neurological dysfunction causing neuropathic pain from the back to the leg.  If you have pain in both the back and leg, there are other possibilities which I won’t go into here.
