What could be causing my bad back pain?

What could be causing my bad back pain?

I don't know if I just pulled my back out or if it could be something worse. I don't have health insurance, so I don't want to go to the hospital if it's nothing.
About a month ago my back started hurting really badly, I couldn't even bend over, I'm only 19. Getting up out of bed, of off the couch is dreadful. It acts up if I sit or stand to long, and I get bad spasms that shoot up my back. It lasted for about a month, and finally last week it slowly started to feel better. But when it was at it's peek it was so bad I had tears come to my eyes, and I'm pretty tolerant of pain. I was taking 5 ibuprofen and it was barely doing anything. Ice didn't help and applying heat helped a bit but not much it would relieve it when on but shortly after removed the pain would be right back to where it was.
Anyways, last week it started to feel better and by the end of the week I was feeling fine again. Then last night I was sitting down at the table leaning over a bit and talking on the phone. I got this sharp pain, like nothing I've ever felt before and I just froze. Then I started getting spasms again, I had to go and lay down 'cause it hurt so bad.
Today it hurt all day, to the point of walking is hardly tolerable. I don't know if it is just normal back pain or what but I really can't take it and I know being on my feet at school all day (I'm a cosmetology student and we stand a majority of the day) isn't helping, but I can't miss anytime out 'cause you need to keep your attendence at 85% or you're dropped.
I don't know if I should try and go to my doctor, or hospital or if it is something that will get better, I like don't have the money, I'm behind on bills and the last thing I need to do is spend money and have them say I just pulled it and there is nothing I can do. When you pull out your back does it normally last this long? The pain is in my lower right side of my back, but when at it's worst it was all of my lower back.
